"He slept that night in his own country and he had a dream wherein he saw God's pilgrims laboring upon a darkened verge in the last of the twilight of that day and they seemed to be returning from some deep enterprise that was not of war nor were they yet in flight but rather seemed coming from some labor to which perhaps these and all other things stood subjugate."
The Crossing, Cormac McCarthy

All these colors were achieved with red, yellow, blue, and green food coloring mixed into white frosting. The amount of drops needed for the color you want is underneath the icing color. So convenient. :)

Um, this is soooooo cool!!!!!

Happy Pi Day!

Goddamnit, I knew something had snuck up on me. And I thought it was St. Patrick’s Day, but it was actually Pi Day. (It clearly wasn’t an interview, or midterms, or lab projects…it was clearly a weird domestic baking obligation that I feel I have.) I’m thinking a quick coconut custard, no top crust, no worries.

gooey s’mores cookies.

Looking for an Oscars dessert….but somehow this doesn’t feel classy enough. This feels like a late-night Thursday night pre-interview stress cookie.

Domesticity Log: January 25, 2012: Strawberry Frangipane Galette

I love galettes. I made this for a simple ending to our three-year anniversary dinner out. See what nice flowers the Boyfriend got me?

teeny tiny cinnamon rolls with maple icing.

So, I’m stressed out, discovered a hilariously stupid and important thing I should have done TWO MONTHS AGO, and today I forgot to wipe down my lab bench as I was leaving. Can I bake yet? IT’S THE ONE THING I STILL DO GOOD AT.

Citrus Cake

Now you can eat those spring Stella McCartney prints we’ve all been seeing, but in the form of a citrus cake!

Domesticity Log: April 24, 2011: Upside-Down Berry Cornmeal Cake

Isn’t this the most beautiful spring dessert you’ve ever seen? I topped it with a simple lemon glaze. The cornmeal had flecks of basil in it and was sweet and savory at the same time, and a cinch to make. Very light and very lovely. I used blueberries, but mostly blackberries.

Domesticity Log: April 25, 2011: Cinnamon Raisin Bagels.

Fresh bagels. I can no longer get enough. The dough is the most beautiful dough in the world.

Domesticity Log: April 11, 2011: New York-Style Bagels

Remember a couple of weeks ago, when I posted those mini-bagels? Forget those. Those were garbage. These, on the other hand, are amazing - soft, chewy, airy, amazing. Ever since I realized that my durum atta flour is just as high in protein as bread flour and therefore can be used as a substitute, I’ve been free to make recipes that call for bread flour without having to buy yet another bag of flour.

But really - these bagels are amazing. I don’t think the Boyfriend and I can ever go back to store-bought. We had them with some vodka beet smoked salmon, above.

Domesticity Log: April 7, 2011: Hearty Breakfast Bread

Sometimes my grain obsession gets so extreme that I literally just bake an entire loaf of whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, rolled oats, raisins, and buttermilk. This is an awesome hearty breakfast loaf.

How to cheer up on the weekend ( II )

  • Make adorable mini-bagels. With bagels this small, how bad can anything be?

Domesticity Log: March 25, 2011: Poppyseed Mini Bagels

Really quite easy. Plus, as half-Ukrainian, I love the boiling step (when they all pop up like little life preservers! Eep!).
