Okay, so I appreciate a film about ideas and theory and authenticity. I love Walter Benjamin, I want more people to tackle this concept. However, this is also a movie about intimacy. And let me try to characterize you how the intimacy part of this movie plays out: like there are two aliens from different planets who have taken on human disguises and are trying to act out what a relationship would look like. It is bizarre. It is completely alien. Juliette Binoche is a fine actress but she is manic and inexplicable in this. I think I quoted Brick Tamblyn at least three times while watching this, and just started yelling “WHY ARE WE YELLING” and “LOUD NOISES” at the screen. It just doesn’t make sense, and it’s uncomfortable and unnerving, and there’s no authenticity to any of the dialogue. Which I guess is sort of interesting given the other focus of the film.
Basically, if you want to watch a movie about intimacy and what it would look like if two people play-acted at intimacy, watch In the Mood for Love.
